Motorcycle Shipping Costs
How Much Does it Cost to Ship a Motorcycle?
If you're like most people, you want to make sure you get a good deal when you're planning on shipping your bike. Maybe you're making plans to go to a rally, and want to spend more time enjoying the event than on a long cross-country trek. Or perhaps you're moving, and don't want to stuff "your baby" in the back of a moving van, in between the sofa and CD collection. Maybe you just found a sweet antique at auction, and need to get it home in the pristine condition it started in.
What’s included – or not included - in your shipping estimate?
Shipping costs for motorcycles can be all over the map, and, like most things, you do get what you pay for. Super-cheap rates can mean you won't see your bike for weeks, have to drop it off at some sketchy loading dock, have to palletize or crate it yourself or that it's being shipped in the back of some guy's truck, which may also be used to transport livestock or furniture. Choosing a specialized motorcycle shipper may mean paying a little bit more, but the convenience and peace of mind makes it well worth the costs. For example, shipping costs for HaulBikes, which provides uncrated, door-to-door, ready-to-ride motorcycle transport, range from $555 to $675, each way, depending on what zone you're transporting in.
Do the shipping costs include insurance?
Other things you may also want to consider: Does the price you're quoted include all the fees, surcharges and insurance? Nothing is more annoying than getting a lowball quote, only to find out (when it's already too late) that your shipping fee has a whole bunch of extras tacked onto it. You also want to make sure you have insurance that covers any damage if your bike is hurt in shipment. Many companies that specialize in shipping have insurance specifically for this scenario.
What equipment is used in shipping?
Also consider if you really want to ship your motorcycle with a "we ship anything" kind of shipping company. While in many cases they do a fine job, properly securing a motorcycle for shipment requires specialized tie-down equipment. Many of these companies also require you to drain the fluids and disconnect the battery. This can be a hassle when you want to get your vacation on the road, as soon as possible.
Specialized motorcycle shippers, such as HaulBikes, ships bikes door-to-door in ready-to-ride condition. Their truck drivers are all riders themselves -- so they know how to load and unload your baby with extra care, and there's no need to drain fluids or disconnect anything.
The cost to ship a motorcycle is more than just a number -- when you factor in the confidence you'll get working with a company with experience and specialized equipment, choosing a shipper who'll treat your baby with all the care it deserves is a pretty easy decision to make.
